Addiction therapists trying to help addicted in the game

Britain’s Telegraph newspaper has news about addiction therapists joining the game themselves, specifically to find and seek out players who might meet the definition of addicted to World of Warcraft. They’re actually looking for official Blizzard support, too. I’m not sure how much help you can actually provide by chatting with a player in the game (“Hello, it looks like you’ve been online for the last 16 hours, are you addicted?”), but they want to do it. Dr. Richard Graham wants to launch a program by the end of the year that includes some in-game outreach, and even he agrees that it’ll be tough sell. Then again, maybe the guy just wants to play some WoW for free: “While a psychiatrist may excel in what they do in the real world, they’re probably not going to be very good at playing World of Warcraft. We may have to work at that if we are going to get through to those who play this game for hours at end.” Right. “Work.”. Seriously, sure, this is definitely an issue — I have a psychologist friend, and he’s done some work with people addicted to video games before, including World of Warcraft. But even he tells me that video game addiction is almost always a byproduct of some other form of addiction

Scattered Shots: Cunning PvP Pets

Good day folks and welcome to Scattered Shots. The column that takes a good look at what it takes to be a Hunter in the World of Warcraft. I am Eddie “Brigwyn” Carrington from the Hunting Lodge. This week we’ll be discussing the best pets to use while playing solo. So grab your traps, check your ammo and let’s go Hunting! This is our last installment in our series exploring the different pet families. In the first post we explored raiding with a Ferocity pet. We identified the current recommended raid pet for each raid build. The next post in the series discussed why Tenacity pets have become the pets of choice for while grinding and farming. This week I’m going to talk about Cunning pets. I like to think of them as the “Fun Pets.” I think of Cunning pets as fun because of the different abilities they have. If you’re lacking a particular ability or need an extra debuff, stun, even snare, the Cunning pets are there to help fill in the gaps. Because of this utility Cunning Pets have often found it difficult to secure a regular place in the PvE world of raids. However, some of the more popular ones are starting to see some success in PvP. So let’s take a closer look at these unique pets.   Cunning Pets The Birds of Prey are a great

Horde vs. Alliance Tier 9 Mighty Battle!

The full Tier 9 previews are finally out, courtesy of MMO Champion. Whatever your opinions are on faction-specific armor – there are arguments to be made for and against it – it’s reasonable to say that some of the sets look pretty darned good. It’s the first time we’re seeing faction-specific armor sets in a long time, so we’ll actually get to do something we can’t do with old armor sets – we’ll pit the Horde and Alliance against each other in an armor face-off! In our Tier 9 Mighty Battle, we’ll pit one faction’s version of the Tier 9 armor against the other and judge them based on the following criteria: Thematic integrity to class – We’ll look at how well Blizzard’s armor design represents the class. The best kind of class armor should be recognizable as a perfect representation of that class. For example, the Warlock’s Tier 5, the Corruptor Raiment, or the Paladin’s Tier 2, the Judgement set, both look unmistakably diabolical and righteous, respectively. Thematic integrity to faction – Because these are the first faction-specific PvE sets, we’ll also examine how well the armor sets embody each faction and their archetypal – or stereotypical –

Warrior Q&A Analysis

Well, the warrior Q&A is finally here. if you play a warrior and you were hoping that this would be the beam of sunshine that would fix your issues with the class, I’m sorry to tell you that it probably won’t be. This isn’t a huge surprise… so far the entire Q&A series has been fairly conservative and this one’s no different… but let’s go over it anyway. First off, of course, we have the intro to the class, which contains this interesting sentence: The warrior class has been a very tricky one to balance, largely due to the way rage converts into damage (which converts into rage, which converts into damage…), and we haven’t completely nailed that design just yet. I think it’s fair to say that anyone who remembers Rage Normalization trembles just a little bit when they see sentences like that. It’s so very easy to render warriors absolutely impotent by tinkering with our rage generation, so I’m going to say right now that I desperately hope they test whatever changes they make very, very thoroughly. The first really significant part of the Q&A discusses the Arms and Fury trees. It’s significant enough that I’m going to reproduce it in its entirety here. One of the things we want to do in the

Time change for this week’s European extended maintenance

European Blue Ancilorn has updated the times for this week’s extended maintenance which will affect a large percentage of realms. We mentioned the extended maintenance to you last week and that Ancilorn was keen to make sure players had an “opportunity to plan accordingly”. The selected realms will be offline from 1:00am to 3:00pm CEST, not 3:00am until 5:00pm CEST as we previously reported. The following servers are affected by the extended downtime: Balnazzar, Bloodfeather, Darksorrow, Defias Brotherhood, Earthen Ring, Frostwhisper, Genjuros, Haomarush, Hellscream, Laughing Skull, Lightning’s Blade, Magtheridon, Neptulon, Nordrassil, Quel’Thalas, Ragnaros, Ravencrest, Runetotem, Shadowmoon, Shadowsong, Shattered Hand, Silvermoon, Skullcrusher, Spinebreaker, Stormrage, Stormreaver, Stormscale, Sylvanas, Terenas, The Maelstrom, The Venture Co, Thunderhorn, Turalyon, Twisting Nether and Vashj.

Scattered Shots: Raiding spec for Hunter pets

Welcome to Scattered Shots. I am Eddie “Brigwyn” Carrington from The Hunting Lodge and you’re not. Today we are reviewing what pets you should consider for raiding and how to spec out your pet for the best possible DPS. So join me will you? As we explore what it takes to make a raiding pet. This past week has been an interesting one for Hunters and their pets. If you were like me, finding out that Hunters could tame Garwal’s Worgen form, reminded you of why being a Hunter is truly awesome. Of course it would last and Zyrhym showed up and had to burst our bubble by delivering the bad news that Blizzard was removing them from the game. Well, it was fun while it lasted. What was nice about this glitch was the passionate responses seen on the Official Forums and Hunter community at large. It really highlighted how much we Hunters love our pets. Many of us see them more as companions than just some other weapon in our Hunter bag of tricks. One way Blizzard has helped foster this idea is by letting us have three different categories (Ferocity, Tenacity, and Cunning) and literally hundreds of different pets to go out and tame. But to me the best part is being able to not only tame my pet of choice, but having the ability to train him. Doing this makes Hunters and their

Mend Pet sponsors an SPCA charity donation drive

Brajana at Mend Pet has kicked off a month-long donation drive and giveaway to support the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She says that since Blizzard has decided to finally give out some more stable slots to Hunters back in patch 3.0.2, what better way to celebrate than by helping some real-life animals. She has a link on her blog for you to give as little or as much as you’d like to support the SPCA and their cause, and if you choose to put the donation “in honor of” Mend Pet (just follow the instructions on her post), she’ll enter you in a drawing to win some prizes. What prizes, you ask? Apparently those are still being worked out, but we’re sure they’ll be great. And it’s a great cause anyway — do you really need prizes to show some pet shelter love? If you do, just hang on — the donation drive lasts through the 31st of this month, so Brajana has some time to get everything together, and even if you donate now, you’ll still be entered for sure. It’s always awesome to see the WoW community put its size and power to good use, and this is definitely a worthy cause to support.
